Meeting the Challenges of Change
Life forces you to adapt to challenges and changes every day. Some of these you can control, some you cannot.
Changes are situational, such as a change in the weather or a change in plans. Sometimes they are so subtle
they quietly come and go, often unnoticed in the distractions of daily living. Then there are the really big
changes that occur, often blindsiding you in their intensity. These are major life events that have a far-reaching
impact on your life. These may be voluntary, such as remarrying or a planned retirement. Others, such as an
unexpected divorce or job loss, a catastrophic accident, or a dire medical diagnosis is thrust upon you. Even if
you see them coming, you may be unprepared for their aftermath.
Major life transitions require reflection and inner re-orientation to work through and resolve. They are times of
letting go of the past and crossing from the old and familiar to something new and unfamiliar. Good or bad, life
changing events cause you to leave something behind. They force you to adjust to a new way of living, whether
or not you are ready to do so. Transitions can also be times of excitement, anticipation, curiosity and hope about
the future, even when the present may be a time of sorrow and loss. Transitions offer the opportunity to learn
more about yourself and use your inner coping skills. They enable and even compel you to make fundamental
changes to how you see the world and to ask yourself what you really want from life. They are the equivalent of
animals shedding their skins in order to grow.
A transition always means the ending of something, which is difficult for many people, even if they were
unhappy in their old situation. Some individuals attempt to avoid endings by tenaciously hanging on to the past.
Still others attempt to avoid endings simply by dismissing them. Those who choose to cope in this manner
concentrate only on the present and the future, completely ignoring or recognizing their need for closure.
Refusing to acknowledge your own personal history and what you have learned from it is a guaranteed way to
be haunted by the past and make moving on more difficult. Yet as you search for a new direction for your life,
you can never be completely disconnected from your past because it is important to have both history and
continuity. Your past and the lessons you have learned from it are both an anchor and a valuable resource that
aids your journey into the future. How well you cope with what has happened determines the direction and
quality of your future life. While you cannot change circumstances or the past, what you can change is your
world view, how you react to your changed circumstances and the choices you choose to make.
